The Laughable Lightness Of Being

2 Oct

I know you are an honest person and that you are proud. But ask yourself one question: why should one actually tell the truth? What obliges us? And why do we consider speaking the truth as a virtue? Imagine that you bump into a crazy man who says he is a fish and that we are all fishes. Are you going to argue with him? Are you going to undress yourself to show that you do not have fins? Will you tell him straight in the face what you think? Well, say it!

His brother Eduard paused and continued: If you tell him the truth and nothing but the truth, only what you really think of him, it means you would enter into a serious conversation with a mad man and become crazy by yourself. And so it is with the world around us. When I see the world right in the face and stubbornly keep on saying the truth, it means that I take her seriously. I should lie, my dear brother, if I want to take crazy people not serious it is necessary to prevent myself not to become one of the crazies.
